Jane’s pulse beat wildly. Being kissed by Alec was like walking on a cloud with a string quartet strumming her favorite Debussy composition in her ear only to be faced by an immaculately attired Senator Callahan dressed in a stunning, floor-length silver gown and sporting a striking expression of displeasure. Jane’s heart beat harder in her chest. She’d spoken with the Senator several times on the phone when she’d call for Alec, but this was the first time she’d seen her face to face.
“Mother? How did you get in here?”
“Happy New Year to you too.” She stepped back into Alec’s living room, allowing them to enter. Alex closed the door behind them.
“Your manager unlocked the door for me. You’ve been avoiding my calls and texts for the last two hours, but I see you’ve been busy. Who is this young woman? And a baby? You’re dating a woman with a baby?”
Jane figured she better jump into this. She’d often overheard the heated conversations Alec had with his mother over the phone.
“Hello, Senator,” Jane extended her hand. “I’m Jane Meriwether.”
With a slant on her mouth, Alec’s mother glanced at her hand and then at Alec before shaking Jane’s offered hand. “Nice to meet you.”
“We’ve never met in person, but I have spoken with you over the phone many times.”
“We have?”
“Mother, this is my Jane," he shook his head aggravated "...my assistant, Jane.”
“Your assistant?” She leaned toward Alec and lowered her voice. “You’re dating someone from your office?”
“No, mother. Jane is only helping me with something.”
“And she brought her baby?”
“It’s not Jane’s baby.”
“So, whose baby is it?” She cocked her head at an angle with an ever-growing intensity in her light blue eyes. The color matched Alec’s. And Angel’s, too.
Jane motioned toward the baby carrier in Alec’s hand. “I should go.”
“No, don’t go, Jane. My mother won’t be here long. Why don’t you put the baby in the guest room while I speak with her for a moment.”
Alec relinquished the carrier with a worried expression on his face. She hated to abandon him like this, but he was probably right. It was better she left the two of them alone.
In the spare bedroom, Jane changed Angel for bed and prepared her another bottle. She settled herself in an overstuffed chair and fed the baby while listening to the argument out in the living room. Poor Alec! But what could she have done? Her presence would only have made matters worse. Maybe she should have left with the baby. This was exactly the kind of thing he’d been attempting to avoid.
But that kiss! What had it all meant? Her mind whirred with uncharacteristic chaos.
Then she bowed her head and prayed for Alec. She prayed for Angel too. Lord, lead us to know what is best for this little girl.
